Pyramid of stones made by tourists, ruining the Balearic Islands

Activists of environmental organizations of the Balearic Islands (Spain) are strongly opposed to the tradition of building small mounds of stones found on the beach. At the end of the last century, this tradition has appeared on the island of Mallorca – couples in love have created on the beaches of small stone pyramid as a symbol of love. Later this tradition was picked up by many tourists vacationing on the island. Today, these pyramids can be seen throughout the archipelago from Formentera to Ibiza and Menorca.

Photos beaches, laden with stone pyramids, tourists willingly to spread in social networks. And do not leave, until they create your own kurgan. However, environmentalists are sounding the alarm: similar structures detrimental impact on the ecosystem of the archipelago. Thousands of tourists removed stones with strip surf, thus destroying the coastline, and so exposed to strong winds and waves. Such erosion can have grave consequences for the island.

Ecologists have begun raising campaigns to explain to tourists that the slightest interference in the environment and changing the natural balance may eventually lead to a catastrophe.
